Pastor’s Lesson for the Week

“Entering a New Decade”

Ecclesiastes 3:11-12  “He has made everything appropriate in its time.  He has also set eternity in their heart, yet so that man will not find out the work which God has done from the beginning even to the end.  I know that there is nothing better for them than to rejoice and to do good in one’s lifetime.”

Matthew 28:19-20  “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.”

Well, 2020 is finally here.  If you are reading this you have survived another decade, and perhaps like me you are wondering what this next set of ten years will bring you.  The 2020’s are already shaping up to be very interesting, and potentially divisive.  The 2020 election will likely be one of the most contrarian ever.  In 2020 the greater United Methodist Church will decide how it is going to proceed in regards to the ruling on homosexuality.  In 2020 and beyond it is likely that many things will change in our individual lives.  Anytime we enter a new year there is an air of uncertainty and anxiety.  As we enter a new decade that feeling is only exacerbated.  In the midst of whatever anxieties about the future we do have, however, it is important for us to remember that the Lord we serve is still in control.

In Ecclesiastes chapter three the writer, likely King Solomon in his old age, recounts that there is an appropriate time for all things.  You may have heard some of the verses leading up to the ones above at a funeral:  “A time to give birth and a time to die; a time to plant and a time to uproot what is planted.”  It goes on like that for ten verses, but at the end we are given some hope in verses eleven and twelve.  We read that the Lord has made everything appropriate in its time.  We read that although we do not know everything that the Lord has been working from the beginning up into the present for us now.  Knowing this friends, why should we be afraid of what this next decade will bring?

In all reality, 2020 and this whole decade will be different from the ones that came before it.  Realistically some of us may not see 2030.  Realistically some of us will go through extreme difficulties, life changes, heartbreak and the like over these next ten years.  However, the same Lord that died for us on the cross to save us from our sins is the same Lord who is still in control today.  The same Lord who looked out for us over the last decade in ways that we couldn’t have possibly imagined is the same one who will do so for the next ten years… whatever they may bring.

As a closing thought, as an eternal optimist I would invite you to think about this next decade in a positive light.  There may be loved ones who pass, drastic life changes, and hardships, but there will also certainly be great unforeseen joys, wonderful experiences that we get to be a part of, and hopefully a great growth in our closeness to the Lord.  (Read your Bible, pray often, and act out your faith to get that last one for sure.)  Just like Solomon said in Ecclesiastes three, there is a time for everything.  2020 and beyond may bring many anxieties for us, but it also hopefully will be another joyful chapter in our lives as we grow closer to the Lord.

Know that I am in prayer for you, and that I am looking forward to tackling this decade with you together in the name of the Lord!

God Bless,

-Pastor Jake
